I have a feeling that by the time prices at Borders drop to anything reasonable, their stock will be mostly gone anyway. In my experience, when a store liquidates like that, it takes them FOREVER to get down to %40 or more off, and by that point all the good stuff they had is gone. But hey maybe this is just me being pessimistic.

Well my Borders were at 20% off and the pickins were already complete passes. I won't bother going back. Strange thing was all the lines, people were nuts for 10-20% off stuff, stacks of books, etc. I don't get it.

Burlington, MA was the same, although I only spotted three LEGO sets left in the whole store.

Absolutely amazing given how bad the liquidation prices are.

This highlights the deterioration of the american education system. American brains are hardwired to respond to the word sale or liquidation instead of actual facts.

There were many occasions in real life where I am absolutely flabbergasted at the lack of simple math processing skills of the american public.

In fact, I'm sure there's a study where it was found that shoppers tend to buy more when the discount is actually less. For eg buy 10 get 3 free is worse than a straight 30% off, but people will tend to go for the "3" free for 10 purchase.

The borders by me in Paramus NJ still has almost all there Lego. They even have most of it on display in the front window under the 25%-50% off sign but none of it moves since there is a Lego store 20 feet away from it. Even when I had the 40% coupon nothing seemed to be worth buying since they are so overpriced. I don,t think anyone will be buying a 74.99 woody's roundup or a 139.99 Fallingwater anytime soon, even if it gets to 40%. Theere boxes also look like they were delivered to there store under a pallet of books, crushed and with all types of security devices taped to the boxes. They had a vaders tie box that was so crushed, that at first glance I thought it was newly packaged in a brickmaster book box.

I am convinced that those shopping at the liquiation sale have no knowledge of Lego MSRP pricing. THey see Lego 25% off and jump on it. Clearly they are not bargain shoppers, coupon users or have any common sense ;)

I really think that people see liquidation sale and jump to buy stuff believing it must be a good deal. I guess that's good for Borders...hopefully that helps Borders survive!

Have they always been that price?

At every Borders in the northeast that I've found them in, Woody's Roundup and Fallingwater have been $62.99 and $129.99 respectively. Shamefully marked up for sure, but still a good 22%+ below MSRP with a 40% coupon alone, and 30%+ below MSRP if you have one or more of the other possible discounts (Plus membership, PSD, welcome gift, etc.).

I'm not sure if they have always been that price or if they are still marked up from Christmas. The store does'nt have price checkers so you really never know until you wait online. I don't think they take the 40% off coupons at the closing locations so its just 25% off.

What's sad is that even with 40% applied to most of borders Lego sets, you can still get it cheaper somewhere else. I'm so glad they'll be gone from my area soon.

I really do not think that is true. They essentially are running a continuous 33% off coupon(for non closing stores) so with a gold membership that is essentially 40% their price off of any set they stock any day of the week. While they general mark up 20-25% that still leaves you 25% of MSRP. That is better than most normal sales and usually better than TRU BOGO 50% Off since you do not have to buy 2 and TRU also marks up. People were making a big deal last week about the Amazon Hogwarts price but the borders with 33% and membership still beat it even when paying taxes.(They even had a 40% base coupon last week that really beat the price) While I am sure that if you are willing to wait and watch some place with always beat the price it some point but that requires a lot of effort which has value also.

Now at the closing store 25% is not so good. Only thing I would probably get with at would be the battle packs since the cost of driving over is more that the money you save with a coupon on those.

I was there over the weekend and I was surprised that all the Lego that was left fit on a small table. Crazy. But then again, not everyone who shops there is like the people on this board, looking for the best deal. They'll take any deal, even if there's the promise of a better one to come.

I went into my local borders with the last 40% off coupon. I left with nothing, their prices are so exaggerated, that even the coupon hardly makes it worth the discount. I agree with the poster that said that better deals can be found despite their 40% coupons.

Although there are always better deals elsewhere, I agree with eriochrome.
Here is an example from a NY Borders:

7913 Clone Trooper Battle Pack
Lego price is $11.99.
Borders price is $12.99 or 8% more.

With 40% borders discount, the price falls to $7.79 or 35% discount from Lego price.
Adding the Plus membership (10% discount), the price falls to $7.01 or 42% discount from Lego price.

With 33% borders discount and plus membership, the price falls to $7.83 or 35% discount from Lego price.

YMMV, but this is a good deal.

I concur w/ ericochrome and hleonffu and others that Borders "CAN" be a good deal.

HP Hogwarts Castle. $149.99 at Borders. With the 40% off coupon AND my plus membership it was $80.99 plus sales tax. or 37.7% off MSRP of $129.99. Amazon can be lower but you have to catch it just at the right time. I only want 1 and not 3 so the TRU B2G1 free doesn't work for me.

Same for the Log Cabin. $34.99 at Borders. With the 40% off coupon AND my plus membership it was $18.89 plus sales tax or 37% off MSRP of $29.99.

Also at Borders you do earn $5 in Borders Bucks for every $100 spent.

Sure there are better deals elsewhere, but I think everyone does what works for them. The Borders is closer to me than TRU/Target and the Lego Store. While Amazon requires no tax and no gas, which is another saver if you see the deal in time ;)

I've been going to that store for a few months now. Mainly for books. I can't believe they emptied the magazine racks at 20% off. I guess most people don't realize that Border has 33% coupons all the time. Atleast they are smart enough to hold out for the Lego's unlike the store In Fort Lee. Books are flying off the shelf for no reason. FYE closed shop at the Pallisades mall and it was the same thing. At 20% more than half the store had been emptied out. It's bad when dvd msrp is $30. $6 off is not alot since you can get most dvds at regular store for under $20.

Magazines were 40% off from the start and the coupons currently do worked for magazines, newspapars, or comics. If it had not been for the 100 person line my wife probably would have bought a couple of the magazines when we were in there the first weekend of the sale.

The FYE on RT4 also closed up last week. The place was mobbed everyday. You would think they were giving stuff away, but in reality they were selling it for about 5% over MSRP. I went in there to get Glee season 1 on DVD when it said 40% off everything. It was 69.99 and the salesperson said they can only do 30% on that item because its new. So I went to Target up the block and it was 39.99 which I still thought was too much, so I went home and got it on Amazon for 29.99 but I'm sure people bought up FYE's 3 copies on sale for 48.99 and thought they got the deal of a lifetime.

I just got an e-mail stating Borders is going to 30% starting Friday 3-11-11. I'm not sure if this applies to all locations though.
