My question is can the battery be changed out or is it one use like the light bricks?

There's a screw on the bottom of the brick that will allow you to open the brick and replace the batteries. Actually the batteries most light bricks can be changed the same way; but some, like Exo-Force lightbricks, can't.

LEGO is usually pretty good when it comes to changing out the batteries as they recognize that these are not one trick toys that get thrown out after the kid gets grown up.
