What overpriced set are you holding out for?

Post by Zeya » Tue Jul 26, 2011 2:31 pm

What set(s) are you holding out for, hoping to snag at a reduced price?

I find that there are some sets from themes I don't typically collect, but I still would like as a one-off or for the parts. However, I find myself unwilling to pay much money for them.

For me, I'm waiting and hoping to find Prince of Persia's Battle of Alamut for at least half off. I have yet to see it for more than about 20% off, I guess because it's a licensed theme. I also want the City of Atlantis, but that won't be on sale any time soon.

Good thread!

I agree w/ PoP Battle of Alamut. I got the other sets (Ostrich Race, Battle for the Dagger and Desert Attack) for so cheap (about $3 each) that I can't bear to pay more than say 25 to 50% of MSRP for that set. Same goes for the other one Quest Against Time.

I'm hoping to get some more Kindgoms sets on sale too. I'd love the Castle at 50% off, but already got it for about 25% off. I suppose I can always return it.

The bigger City sets (over $50), I try to wait until 30-50% off.

Falcon, Republic Frigate, Pod racers, Black Pearl. I have no versions of the first three and I am hoping to snag my first pirate ship, a reduced QAR would be nice if it existed.

Republic Frigate, T6 Jedi Shuttle.

These ships are ok. I like them, but I don't like them to the tune of their MSRP, so I'm holding out. If I miss them completely, I won't be heartbroken though.

I was just thinking about this the other day - I very rarely buy anything at full MSRP, but I sort of have this unofficial tier system of the sets that I really want and will grab for a smaller discount if I find them, sets that I like and would be disappointed to miss out on but don't want to pay too much for, and those sets that I will only buy on deep discount because they have cool pieces or whatnot, but that I'm not all that interested in.

The non-licensed sci-fi themes (Space Police 3, Alien Conquest) seem to always fall in the first tier. I want them all and will buy them at retail (as I did with the two low-end AC sets) or a slight discount. Still, the top-level of these sets always seems to be the hardest to pull the trigger on - I got the SP3 Galactic Enforcer for 50% off clearance and wouldn't mind a nice discount on Earth Defense HQ.

Recently I grabbed Harry Potter "The Burrow" for 30% off, representing the second tier - sets that would be nice to have but only if I get a respectable discount on it. The fact that it was the only on left kind of forced my hand - had they a few more, I might have tried to wait it out to 50% off.

Oddly enough, aside from the set here and there that's hard to find or really appeals to me, it seems that the Star Wars sets all fall into the third tier - not for the pieces, because I have most of my SW sets still assembled - but for some reason I tend to wait and see what kind of major deals can be found on these. While I really like the theme, NinjaGo seems to also be in this category - I want the sets and pieces but apparently I'm unwilling to delve into this theme without some major discount incentive, seeing as how I've not purchased a single one even though I was really excited by the theme when it was first unveiled.

i was happy to see Earth Defense HQ at my local Target.
Hoping it makes it to next clearance rounds in couple of months.

These are my 'realistic' hold-outs:

Harry Potter - Hogwarts (not the castle)
Star Wars - Cade Bane's Speeder
City - any of the Space/Harbour sets
Kingdoms - King's Carriage Ambush
Hillside House

I really want another Battle of Alamut because it's a great set but that 50% clearance on PoP when everyone thought they were on the way out makes me unwilling to pay more for them now :geek:

Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle for sure. I've always wanted the Hogwarts castle and my girlfriend would go crazy if she got to build it with me.

I'll add Hillside House to my list, too. I have all the Creator houses since my dark age (Beach House onward), but for some reason the Hillside House seems a little too pricey and underwhelming. But I still want it. I wish they hadn't nerfed the Creator houses and made them smaller. :(

In fact, I have the very similar thought as "vynsane", who clearly well explained the practice for shopping lego.

I am patient enough to wait for discount, and I haven't paid for full MSRP (except green grocer) since I had learned that sale and deal were around for lego set. So, literally, while lego is one of an expensive hobby, I am holding out at every set until I find the sale. If I can't find a deal for the set I really want right before it is discontinued, I would order from S@H to earn some VIP pts.

I've been good this year. I don't think I bought any sets at MSRP. maybe the CMF4. atleast the ones i really need. I've been waiting for atleast 25% discount. I did break and purchased petshop for my niece. Her birthday is coming up. But atleast I used the 10% discount. No other store currently has this set and she loves her modular buildings as I do.

I'm holding out for the some of the higher priced AC sets, notably Earth Defense HQ and Alien Mothership.

When I came out of my dark ages, I was very much drawn to Power Miners line towards the end of their production run. Before I discovered toysnbricks Sales & Deals forum, I bought many of them at MSRP only to see them deeply discounted in the months to come. Lesson learned!

I'm holding out for the Fire Brigade, Grand Emporium, Pet Shop, and Tower Bridge. I don't know if they're overpriced though based on the price per piece. They're just expensive :)
