Investing Thoughts

IF lets say looking back on first licensed releases such as Harry Potter, Spiderman, & Batman.

Do you think that stuff like the new Marvel Superhero Avengers Wave & Lord of the Rings would be good investments?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

Ok, kidding aside, there is no way to tell for sure, but if you have the discretionary funds and storage space it would not hurt to pick up the ones you like the best and pack them away for a few years. Worst case scenario you get what you paid for them. Nothing like LotR has been done before, may never be done again, and the SuperHeroes stuff has been popular for decades.

I would agree with brickarmor on this. Buy the sets that you want no matter what. You can't go wrong in making an investment in a set you would want to keep for yourself if you can't resell at a profit. I try not to buy into any other themes for resale unless the discount is 50% or above and then it's just hard to pass up. For the themes I enjoy like SW I have no problem on paying MSRP if I like them enough and that just means I'll buy more if they happen to go on sale.

Exactly, that's what I was thinking before I pulled the trigger.

If you check on the curren market value of the batman, spiderman, indiana jones, and harry potter series, they still retain value. So, I believe the line of Super Heroes is worth to invest because of the popularity from the movie.

I agree with all the above posters. However, keep in mind that it also depends on how long LEGO keeps the item in production. For example, they kept the "limited edition" 6212 X-Wing Fighter for 5 years. Over saturated to even let the secondary market grow (not to mention the new one was released right after).

...copied from another thread....

HI all, also glad to have found this thread. Well I was so sick of rubbish interest rates on savings that I splashed out about £1000 on lego to test the theory of it being a good investment. I looked for best possible prices and spread purchases in terms of cost and theme but got stuff I liked. Intention to hold for 1 - 5 years depending on unique circumstances of each. At the very least my kids (who are on 2nd hand creators sets now) are going to be well happy...but I hope to sell most for a profit

This is my portfolio:

Hoth Echo base*2
LOTR Shelob * 2
LOTR Helms deep *1
Fire brigade*2
Minecraft*3
Winter village cottage*2
Polybags of Frodo (7), Uruk Hai (7), Thor (10)
Pudzy bear*3 :)
Friends Advent Calender 2012*2
Star Wars advent Calender 2012*3

Anything you think is a complete dud?
Anything you like?
Any other recommendations..I quite liked 9493 X wing starfighter what do you think of that to hold?

Thanks!

You might be stuck with Helms Deep, FB, and the Cottage for a while. As for the Xwing, it's noteworthy that TLG and Walt Lucas have ten more years to make ten more variations.

They couldnt give away the original batman lineup, I saw the exact same stock sit for months, and now look what happened. ANYTHING can happen in the secondary market, so you have to diversify your bets, just like any other form of investing.

this.

hehe Target had original Batman on massive clearance for months, along with Skeleton Tower (red wizard Castle), all at 30% off or higher.

Walmart had entire endcaps of Jango Fett Slave 1's on clearance for several months for around $20.

Before UCS Millenium Falcon was retired it was also heavily discounted.

I think you are doing good to start!

My only advice, is that when you are starting to invest, try to pick up themes (sets) that are retiring soon.

For Instance right now POTC and Harry Potter are retiring and both themes will be gold in the aftermarket for years to come. POTC will likely go down in the history books as an amazing theme with many highly sought after sets, not just the ships. But right now because we are saturated with HP and POTC product its difficult to measure this potential.

cheers and good luck!

also I fully believe in Karma. When you find good deals always 'pay it forward' and try to share your good fortune with other charities, especially during the holidays. many people in the world aren't as lucky as we are to have resources and education. Always give to charity! It has a funny way of coming back around.

This is just me, but I'm hoping they start producing sets based on Looper. That movie was incredible.

Agreed! It's nice to hear from like minded people!

Give the gift of Lego to charity and make a child's Christmas special!

Over time I don't think you can go into the minus on any LEGO set you purchase. Just always keep in mind that you often have to pay fees for selling (ebay, paypal, etc.) and expect that there is always plenty of other people selling as well. You have to remember, there is plenty of other investment opportunities out there for your money with better (!) rates of return for less work (stocks, funds, etc.). I don't think selling LEGO will make you rich (unless you sell many thousands of sets) - however, it's probably a very safe investment.

I agree with Harry99. There are easier ways to invest money, but for some this is far more interesting and fun than stocks.

^ Totally agree - it's more fun and exciting compared to having a stock porfolio. Much more tangible. It's always good to have a mix of investiments though - don't put it all on one card (and I would argue the same is true for LEGO).

Investing in lego takes the fun out of the hobby. If you have kids, imagine the joy of getting a new set .... when there's about 100 sets sitting at home. There's no novelty in the toy anymore. You can keep it out of sight but still, your life will be surrounded by lego. Good luck keeping them separate. And I'm going to predict the POTC and HP line will be lousy after market as I see demand for them not that high.

^POTC demand will be quite high I think as there is more movies coming out over time. So folks will want the discontinued sets and they will pay a premium. Even the Indiana Jones LEGO sets are well above MSRP right now (sealed in box) - so HP sets will do very well I think.

Time will tell!

I'm not sure about PoTC, but I think HP will appreciate pretty well. The Hogwarts Express and the Burrow set are already going for about $150 each.

What do you think about LOTR 9471 Uruk Hai army long term? Seems like a great set...especially when you can get it at like $24 at target with the red card.

i have successfully been able to keep investing and getting lego for kids separate. It definitely helps if the investment is of a different line than what the kids may be into but if same, you have to think about getting doubles or triples and slowly giving them out for special occasions - I got lego investments in my sons closet, and the basement and he only knows probably less than 10% of the collection. I am going to predict POTC is not a good investment except for the two ships - HP will only be good investment for certain sets too. No product line has ever had the whole line been an excellent investment. exception are the original batman sets.
