Modular Buildings VS. Trains

Post by ezra » Thu Dec 06, 2012 3:39 pm

Hi All,

Over the past year, three of my favorite purchases are The Mini Modulars, The Haunted House, and The Maersk Train. The MMs and HH, were both enjoyably fun builds and look great on display. Owning them makes me wish I had collected all of the actual line of modulars from the beginning. I haven't always been a huge fan of train sets, but the Maersk Train has warmed me up to the idea of also starting a collecting of trains.

I was just wondering, between the two themes of Modular buildings and trains, Which do you like more?
Which appeals to you more? why? Also, which do you value more: playability or collectibility?

I enjoy both Modulars and Trains myself. I prefer Modulars more myself. I think its because there are more different varieties available, have interesting details, and allow me to add on my own much more easily than coming up with a new locomotive, etc. I can also add city stuff to make modulars more playable... both have merits, and can even been intertwined.
I have mixed feelings about new releases: I can't wait to see and get the new sets... but I can't figure out where I'm gonna put them or store them.

Trains takes a lot of space to appreciate because of the track layout and environment. If space isn't an issue, then trains can take the cake.

Regular modulars are very cool and have less of a space issue. They have high detail and have play ability inside and out.

Mini Modulars is perfect for what I need going forward. They take minimal space and are more affordable. I hope they continue having mini modular sets released that covers all the regular modular sets. I can sell my regular modulars and make space for Lord of the Rings/Hobbit.

Same can be said for Star Wars. Their mini/midi scale ships + Death Star II let me completely scale down to Battle of Endor and Battle of Hoth (with the Euro microfig game pieces). This will give space back to Blacktron (1).

Indeed. The trains just don't looks as good on a shelf. You just gotta have a decent layout to appreciate them.

If you have the space, building a layout with both is epic. Both themes work so well together.

That is just outstanding...nice work!

It looks so idyllic (apart from the haunted house, of course) that for some reason, I immediately thought that you could add some ADU walkers at the edge of the city for a little War of the Worlds flavor.
