I don't personally collect city sets. Its not that I don't like them, its just that don't have unlimited cash, so choices have to be made. That being said, if a set has a good "hook" then I often find myself buying it anyway. This set has that hook, that being a LEGO bear. But the price gave me pause. Luckily, I found this for 45% off in an after Christmas clearance. Lets take look. There is a lot in this set, so there will be a lot of pictures.
First up, the front of the box. We see that this set comes with 5 figures, the previously mentioned bear, a police helicopter and van and a tree/cave.
The back of the box reveals the modular nature of the build, and some of the play features. I like the idea of the crooks escaping by pushing out the mail box. I haven't "played" with that part of the set. Do the figures actually fit through there?
Inside the box. We get 6 numbered bags, 2 medium sized green base plates, and an instruction booklet bag, with cardboard support. I love it when the instructions and stickers come in a bag with cardboard. I hate getting instructions all rolled up and creased.
There are 5 instruction booklets. The cover of each one shows you what you make with it. These is also a small sticker sheet in the bag. Stickers are one of those things that I don't know what to do about. If its a set I want to display, then I wish they had included printed elements. If its a set that I am buying for parts, then stickers are preferable since printed elements have limited use in MOCs.
The stickers. Mostly police logos for the vehicles. I didn't attach the stickers during this build.
A random page from the instructions. Steps are numbered and parts required shown. That's a good thing in my opinion.
The contents of bag number 1. In this bag you build the cave/tree and the crooks ATV. You get the crooks and a police woman as well as "the Bear"!
Well hello, Mr. Bear. The bear is one piece. Both sets of legs move.
And here the bear is standing on his hind legs. He doesn't balance very well like this, but he can do it.
The mini figures. You get three in this bag, the 2 crooks and a police woman. The crooks look like the stereotypical "red neck" crooks you see in bad 70's movies, with the missing teeth and overalls. The police woman comes with hat, but no hair.
And from the back.
Here's the tree. At the base is a cave that opens and closes. The crooks hide their loot in there. I personally hate LEGO trees, but that's just me. I like the mushroom piece at the base.
Here is the open cave. It's a small little hole but you can stick the gold and money and brief case in there quite nicely.
And the ATV. This is actually a nice little build and looks quite realistic. Comes with a telescope, crowbar and a place to put money/gold or mail.
Also in this bag you get two letters, a shovel and a pick axe. Also shown in this picture are the extra pieces.
All the stuff from this bag. This bag alone would have made a nice set to buy in my opinion. Watch out for the BEAR!
Bag number 2 contains the parts for the mini helicopter and pilot.
The pilot from the front. I like the details on his flight suit.
The pilot again without helmet and a bit closer so you can see more details.
And from the back, showing the back details on the torso.
And the helicopter complete. Only room for a pilot, but there are two cargo areas behind him. Its an ok little vehicle.
And the extra parts from bag 2.
Bag number 3 has the parts for the van, and the final mini figure, the male police officer.
The police officer. Again, reminds me of a 70's tv show police man. I like the new style of hat they have from this wave.
And from the back. The attention to detail is amazing, the cord running down his back for the radio as an example.
The beginning stages of building the van.
The van again at a later stage.
And the finished product. Its a nice quick build. My four year old put this all together himself, so its a nice easy build for younger LEGO maniacs.
And the extras from bag #3.
On to bag four, where we start to build the actual station. This is half of the station, the office part. You get a bunch of those new "brick" or masonry type bricks in this build.
An early stage of the assembly process. I like the coffee maker in the corner. Where are the donuts? :)
The lower section of the office is nearly done. I love the computer elements.
And bag four is finished. This view from the back shows us the inside (and the extra parts).
And from the front you can see the door and window as well as the front "porch" for lack of a better word.
Bag number 5 contents. These pieces build the other half of the station, the lock up part.
Instead of glass, you get bars on your windows in this early construction shot.
In this shot you can see the mail box. This piece slides out to allow the crooks to escape. Like I said before, I've never tried to fit a figure through that slot, but it doesn't look they would make it with their arms. But its a fun idea.
And the finished product from the front (with extra part).
And from the back. Not much inside the jail, just some bunks.
Bag number six provides the parts for the walkway that connects the other two parts of the station together.
Here you can see that it comes with radar or some such device.
In this shot, the walkway and radar dish have been attached. The build is nearly complete.
Finished. The tree and gate across the center have been added in. Extra parts in foreground.
And finished station from behind.
And the complete set.
Final thoughts. Even for you lucky Americans who get to pay far less for LEGO then rest of us, this set is too expensive in my opinion. I would never have bought it at full price in Canada. ($100 for 633 pieces, plus tax? No thanks,) But putting that aside, the minifigures are nice, not amazing, but for a city set they work. The bear is cool, and you get some nice parts. If you are a big fan of the forest line, its a good center piece for the line. It has good vehicles and play features, and some nice parts such as the masonry pieces and the computer monitor and keyboard. Wait for a sale if you want or need this set. Don't pay full price, as its not worth that much.

Re: [REVIEW]: 4440 Forest Police Station
Nice review...thanks. For some reason, this set keeps on popping up in my head as something to get, even though I am not terribly passionate about the City stuff. Now that you have it, what do you think the "sweet spot" is price-wise for this set considering all of the other attractive options out there?

Re: [REVIEW]: 4440 Forest Police Station
I rarely break the "golden ratio" rule when buying sets. 10 cents a piece. So for this set, unless it comes in at less then $64, its too much.

Re: [REVIEW]: 4440 Forest Police Station
I am with you there, I just wondered if you felt it was even worth that...perhaps you'd be okay paying $64, but you felt given the types of pieces, etc., that you would not budge until it was below $50...

Re: [REVIEW]: 4440 Forest Police Station
I think I paid $55 plus tax, so I thought I got it at a good price. It depends on your own extimation of a sets worth at the end of the day.
