Collectable Minifigure blind pack weights

Post by stclaire » Wed Sep 16, 2015 7:13 pm

So I saw online that some people were using scales to weigh decks of Pokemon cards, and it occurred to me that such a technique might be effective for the collectable minifig blind packs. So here are the weights I got for most of series 13 and 14. Weights are of course in the pack, including the package itself, instruction sheet, etc... and are all in grams. If others can post weights we can try and see if there are consistencies and perhaps use this as a method to help determine which figure is in a pack.

13-1: 10.702
13-2: 10.444
13-4: 11.368
13-5: 11.344

13-13: 10.372
13-14: 13.436
13-15: 10.908

I just purchased a case of 14 which I have split with some friends. Since at least one set will be an XMass present we will leave some of them unopened. Hopefully with your data we can figure out what is what. I will post our results once we are done.

Are the numbers here "14-16" referring to the number as displayed on the character sheet that comes with the minfigures? Which would mean "14-16" would be Vampire lady with the spider.

61 series 14 bags sorted by weight. All weights are in grams. As you can see, a few of them can be distinguished by weight. The others get you to a good idea of what it could be.

This is a great idea! Any suggestions on portable scales that are that precise?

There are a few on amazon just search .001 scale. The scale I used was at work and so accurate it is inside a box so the air movement doesn't effect the weaght.

During Series 3, I bought a .001 scale just for this. But I found significant variations between the same figures. It was an accurate scale because the exact same item would weigh the same each time. I was really surprised because LEGO has regular quality. I should have weighed each piece to pin point what was causing all the variations. But my main goal was to weigh blind packs in the store to know which ones to buy. The feel method was more deterministic.

I would have too many overlapping values and could only group each pack in to a possibility group. Combine that with feel and you should be okay.

My current theory is that the plastic packaging and the paper foldout are causing the variations, maybe the next release i will check ... but I doubt I will have time to do it (or more precisely, spend the time to figure it out.)

That is exactly how I operated.
